The Swedish Cleansing Tool That's Better Than a Clarisonic
I love being clean. I shower every day, sometimes twice a day. I change my pillow case nightly and my sheets twice a week. I go through fresh towels and washcloths like it’s my motherfucking job. And if you ever see me asleep with my makeup still on, just assume that I am actually dead.
Point is, I hold keeping my face squeaky clean to an almost Howard Hughes level of insanity. So when the Clarisonic came out years back, touted for its ability to leave your face six times cleaner than traditional hand washing, naturally I was quick to get on board.
At $169, the Clarisonic Mia 2 promised "soft, radiant skin," as well as multiple speed settings, so supposedly even sensitive types like myself could use it daily. Initially, I was thrilled with the results. My complexion was cleaner, clearer, and downright Downey soft. But after just a month, the relationship took a turn.
Gradually I noticed my skin becoming easily irritated: breakouts, redness, you name it. The Clarisonic had over-delivered, exfoliating my skin to the point of being vulnerable. After a year of on-again, off-again trials with different brush heads, I buried the baby blue device in the back of the closet and promised to never again let technology come between me and my face washing.
Cut to three years later when a Sephora associate insisted I try a new Swedish cleansing tool called the Foreo Luna. Unlike the Clarisonic, the Foreo Luna is designed with built-in silicone bristles, making it gentler and more hygienic than its bulky American counterpart. It also means there’s no need to purchase replacement brush heads every three months (which, at roughly $30 a pop for a Clarisonic, can really add up).
The associate when on to say how, rather than aggressively brushing away the dirt, the Foreo used pulsating movements to deliver a deep clean, making it ideal for even the wimpiest of complexions (ahem, mine). As an added bonus, she pointed out that, while the Foreo would need to be replaced every two years, a single charge could last up to six months (a vast improvement from the almost weekly charges my needy Mia 2 required).
Before you could say VIB Rouge, I was in the checkout line with my $139 Luna Mini 2. And you guys, I’ve never looked back. My products last longer, my face feels cleaner, and my skin is never irritated. I’m a born again believer in beauty gadgets, and after a year and a half, the Foreo Luna is my ride or die. I shower with it, I travel with it, and come six months from now when it finally dies, I’ll probably throw a tiny funeral for it.
After which point, I’ll go out and buy another.
